Meera vs State by the Inspector of Police Thiruvotriyur Police Station Chennai

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah

In Brief

A mother-in-law was convicted under Section 498A IPC for harassing and torturing her daughter-in-law over jewels, leading to the daughter-in-law's suicide by self-immolation. The Trial Court and High Court both found the harassment proven based on testimony from the victim's parents. The Supreme Court confirmed the conviction, rejecting the argument that the 96% burn injuries vitiated witness credibility or that domestic disagreements amounted to defence. The Court recognized woman-on-woman cruelty as particularly grave and duty-breaching. However, considering the appellant's current age of 80 years and the 16-year passage since the 2006 incident, the sentence was reduced from one year to three months rigorous imprisonment as a mitigating circumstance.
