A compromise decree passed in 1985 regarding a 7-biswa land was challenged as inadmissible in evidence on grounds of non-registration. The Supreme Court held that compromise decrees concerning property that is the subject-matter of the suit do not require registration under the Registration Act, 1908. Section 17(2)(vi) exempts "any decree or order of a Court" from registration, with an exception only for decrees covering property outside the suit's subject-matter. Since the compromise decree dealt with the suit property itself, it fell within the exemption and did not require registration. The Court set aside the trial court and High Court orders and directed the decree to be exhibited in evidence.
