REDDY & ORS vs STATE OF ANDHRA PRADESH ANR

Bench: 2 — Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Prashant Kumar Mishra

In Brief

A woman filed a dowry harassment complaint against her sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and father-in-law after her husband sought dissolution of their 2014 marriage. The appellants, residing in Hyderabad, were accused of demanding dowry and instigating the husband during occasional visits to Guntur. The Supreme Court quashed the case, holding that vague, general allegations against family members without specific evidence cannot sustain criminal prosecution. The Court reaffirmed that relatives living in different cities and having no direct involvement in matrimonial disputes should not be prosecuted to prevent misuse of dowry laws.
