In Brief
Kamla died in the home of her husband Shyam Sunder and his family (the appellants), and her body was hastily cremated before her family could intervene. The husband was convicted of causing dowry death and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment; the appellants were convicted of destroying evidence (Section 201 IPC) and sentenced to one year imprisonment and a fine. On appeal, the Supreme Court found that while the Trial Court correctly acquitted the appellants of involvement in causing the death, their conviction for destroying evidence rested on mere assumption without credible evidence. The Court set aside the appellants' conviction, holding they were entitled to the benefit of doubt due to lack of material evidence connecting them to the offence.
