The Supreme Court heard an appeal by a District Consumer Co-operative Wholesale Stores challenging the High Court's eviction order and damages award for occupation of leased premises. The Court recognized that the cooperative society's activity, being undertaken for the benefit of member-shareholders, differed from strictly commercial business activities. While upholding the eviction, the Court partly allowed the appeal and modified the judgment to reduce the compensation award to a reasonable quantum in the interest of justice. Upon payment of the modified amount, the decree would constitute full and final settlement of all claims between the parties.
