The Supreme Court reduced the sentence of Pranjay Purushotambhai Goradia, convicted under Section 307 IPC for attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend, resulting in her paralysis. Although the Bombay High Court had imposed life imprisonment plus a fine, the Supreme Court exercised its sentencing discretion and converted the life sentence to time already served (over 12 years since 2006). The Court considered the accused's youth (21 at the time of the 1990 incident), the passage of nearly two decades, and the severity of the victim's injuries. However, the Court imposed substantial compensation of Rs. 10 lakh (inclusive of the earlier Rs. 2 lakh fine) to be paid to the victim or her family within six months of release, affirming that sentencing discretion must be tempered by all relevant circumstances.
