The Supreme Court addressed challenges to High Court orders directing implementation of 40–50 per cent reservation for in-service doctors in Super Specialty Medical Courses for 2020–2021. The Court held that counselling shall proceed without reservation for the current academic year, as the admission process had already commenced on stated terms (no reservation). Changing the rules mid-stream would prejudice meritorious candidates. The Court deferred substantive questions about the scope of the Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association judgment and the permissibility of reservation in Super Specialty Courses for later hearing in February 2021. The direction applies only to 2020–2021.
