Shrimati Shyam Lata (later represented by her daughter Rama Rani) alleged her brothers forged her signatures on a rent receipt to fraudulently claim tenancy of her shop and committed criminal intimidation. A criminal case was registered, but initial investigations stalled when the trial court refused to allow signature comparison. The High Court issued contradictory orders on the same date: one allowing modified investigation (through handwriting expert photographs) and another setting aside that investigation direction. The Supreme Court held the contradictory orders legally confusing and impermissible. It set aside the order negating the investigation direction, validating the subsequent chargesheet and cognizance, and allowed the criminal proceedings to continue."
