In Brief
Foresters in the Madhya Pradesh Forest Service challenged the seniority order on the ground that colleagues who received accelerated promotions to Deputy Ranger and Forest Ranger posts due to fortuitous postings in particular circles had become their seniors. The Supreme Court held that members of a service cannot gain seniority over seniors merely through such circumstances. However, finding the rules governing selection and seniority fixation unclear, the Court set aside the High Court's judgment and remitted the matter to the High Court for fresh consideration within six months.
