The Supreme Court registered a suo motu writ petition addressing critical vacancies in India's District and Subordinate Judiciary. As on the date of the order, 5,133 of 22,036 sanctioned judicial posts remained vacant. The Court, invoking Article 142, directed all High Courts and State Governments to furnish detailed information on recruitment timelines, compliance with established schedules, acceleration of processes, fresh vacancies, and infrastructure adequacy. The matter was listed for further hearing on 1 November 2018, with four Senior Counsel appointed as Amici Curiae to assist across different States.
