S. Krishna Sradha vs State of Andhra Pradesh & Ors

Bench: 3 — Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Aniruddha Bose, V. Ramasubramanian

In Brief

A meritorious student (S. Krishna Sradha) was illegally denied admission to an MBBS course for no fault of their own. The Supreme Court held that when an educational authority breaches fair procedure and equality principles, a candidate who promptly pursued legal remedies can be granted exceptional relief—even admission after the cut-off date has passed—to restore them to their original position. The Court overruled its earlier Jasmine Kaur decision, affirming that transparent procedures are mandatory in admissions, and that denying fair treatment violates fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Constitution.
