In Brief
Land owners challenged compensation awarded by the High Court for agricultural land acquired by the State for coal mining by Singareni Collieries Company Limited. The LAO had awarded Rs.7,000–Rs.6,000 per acre; the High Court awarded Rs.80,000 per acre (after deducting one-third for development from a market value of Rs.1,23,000). The Supreme Court held that since the entire land was to be mined and no developmental activities were required, the one-third deduction was unjustified. The Court partly allowed the appeal, awarding compensation at Rs.1,23,000 per acre plus Rs.10,000 per acre for coal deposits, without the development deduction.",
