A senior IPS officer and a district collector sought expungement of adverse remarks made by the High Court during bail proceedings of a corruption-accused police officer. The appellants had no involvement in those bail proceedings. The Supreme Court held that courts must exercise extreme caution when making adverse remarks, especially against parties with no stake in the proceedings. Such remarks, now widely publicized through live court broadcasts, cause significant reputational harm without justification. The Court found the High Court's adverse remarks unreasonable and its direction to investigate the appellant unjustified. The impugned interim order was quashed, and the appeal was allowed.
