In this domestic violence case, the Supreme Court clarified the jurisdictional scope of courts under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. A wife who left her matrimonial home in Chennai and stayed with her parents in Bengaluru filed a domestic violence petition against her husband, in-laws, and fourteen other relatives across three states. The Court held that the Bengaluru Magistrate has jurisdiction because the wife resides there. However, the Court partly allowed the appeal by quashing proceedings against ten relatives (in Gujarat and Rajasthan) against whom no specific domestic violence allegations were made. The case against the husband and parents-in-law proceeded before the Bengaluru Magistrate."
