Sneha Kalita vs Union of India & Anr

Bench: 3 — Dipak Misra

In Brief

Writ petitions challenged the absence of action against the "Blue Whale" online game—a dangerous multi-step online challenge linked to suicides. The petitioner sought immediate bans on sites promoting violent games. The Court held that games endangering life cannot be permitted. While noting CERT-In's existing efforts, the Court directed coordinated action: Doordarshan to prepare educational programmes in consultation with relevant ministries within one week, telecasting awareness about the game's dangers on both national and private channels, and exploring awareness-spreading through other media. The matter was listed for further hearing on 20 November 2017.
