Sneha Kalita vs Union of India & Anr

Bench: 3 — Dipak Misra

In Brief

These writ petitions sought immediate action to block websites and shut down the Blue Whale online game and similar violent games that encourage suicide and self-harm, particularly among young people. The Supreme Court held that whatever endangers life cannot be permitted. It directed the government's CERT-In to continue blocking such sites and directed Doordarshan and private channels to broadcast educational programmes warning about the dangers of such games. The Court also requested awareness campaigns through other media. The matter was adjourned for further proceedings and submission of a comprehensive report on government action.
