The State of Andhra Pradesh appealed against a High Court decision acquitting the respondents of charges under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003 (sections 135 and 138). The High Court had upheld the acquittal because a key irregularity made the proceedings unmaintainable: the Inspector of Police who filed the complaint was not empowered to investigate such charges when the alleged offence occurred. The Supreme Court found no reason to interfere, holding that the material procedural defect properly justified the acquittal. The appeal was dismissed."
