In Brief
A young married woman (Babli) died of severe burn injuries approximately 3½ years after her marriage. The prosecution alleged that her in-laws had harassed and tortured her over a dowry demand of Rs. 60,000 and household items, resulting in her death. The trial court convicted the mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband under dowry-death provisions (Sections 498A and 304B IPC). The High Court acquitted them, finding the evidence weak and insufficient. The Supreme Court upheld the acquittal, holding that the prosecution failed to prove a proximate connection between the alleged dowry-related harassment and the victim's death, relying instead on hearsay evidence and testimony riddled with discrepancies and lacking direct knowledge of the dowry demands.
