In Brief
Senior customs officers were allegedly found in a drunken state watching obscene films with bar girls in a private guest house on 26 August 2008. A criminal complaint was filed, but the High Court quashed it, holding the venue was not a public place. The Supreme Court disagreed, finding that despite being privately owned, the guest house was a public place for purposes of criminal law. The Court allowed the appeal, set aside the High Court's order, and restored criminal proceedings. It also directed the Government to take appropriate departmental action against the officers and referred the matter to the Revenue Secretary for a senior officer's investigation.
