On 10 March 2000, a truck struck a moped in Patiala, killing the rider, 15-year-old Lavjot Singh. The driver fled the scene. The appellant, identified as the truck driver by eyewitnesses and surrendered by his ITBP commandant, was convicted under IPC Sections 279 and 304-A and sentenced to six months and two years imprisonment respectively. The Supreme Court upheld the conviction, finding the eyewitness identification reliable and discarding minor discrepancies as not undermining the core facts. The appellant's arguments about time passage and lack of visible damage on the truck were rejected; the sentence was upheld as proportionate to the loss of young life.
