The Supreme Court transferred a writ petition from the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging a 2013 Haryana notification providing 10% reservation for economically backward persons (EBC) in government jobs. The petitioners feared this would exceed the 50% reservation limit established in Indra Sawhney. The transfer was granted because substantially identical questions about EBC reservation limits were being decided in parallel civil appeals before the Supreme Court. Although the Court acknowledged the principle from Sri Selvaganapathy that cases may await Supreme Court decisions, it held this is not absolute, and transfer is appropriate where constitutional questions of general importance arise across multiple States and require unified adjudication.
