In this 2018 decision, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Surender Singh under IPC sections 436, 429, 323, and 506 for setting fire to a house in 2000, causing burn injuries to cattle and the complainant. However, the Court reduced his seven-year sentence to five years. The reduction was justified because: the crime occurred 18 years prior; the accused had already served three years and three months in custody; and the village panchayat had ordered Rs. 9 lakhs compensation to the victim, which was paid. The appellant was given six weeks to surrender to serve the remaining sentence.
