In Brief
A man was convicted of causing death by negligence and rash driving after a 1996 road accident. The High Court upheld his conviction but reduced his sentence. By the time of Supreme Court appeal, the parties had settled. The Court found the conviction sound but, noting the settlement, time elapsed since 1996, and the appellant's conduct in promptly helping the victim, set aside his imprisonment on both counts. The conviction and compensation order of Rs. 50,000 were maintained.
