The appellants were convicted by the Trial Court and High Court of murder under Section 302/149 IPC and causing grievous hurt under Sections 325, 324, and 323/149 IPC for their participation in a violent mob assault on the deceased and injured witnesses. The Supreme Court upheld the convictions for grievous hurt but set aside the murder conviction. Although the court found the appellants guilty of attacking with deadly weapons, medical evidence showed the fatal head injury could not have been caused by the specific weapons attributed to them. Consequently, conviction was downgraded from murder to causing grievous hurt under Section 326/149, with the sentence reduced from life imprisonment to seven years."
