Ajay Shankar Srivastava vs Bar Council of India & Anr

Bench: 3 — Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha, J B Pardiwala

In Brief

A practicing advocate challenged the Bar Council of India's office order dated 1 November 2022 which appeared to halt the verification of advocates' educational credentials. The Supreme Court upheld the need for verification to weed out unqualified practitioners who threaten judicial integrity. The Court dismissed the challenge and instead constituted a High Powered Committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to monitor and expedite the verification process. Universities were directed to verify certificates free of charge without delay, and all State Bar Councils directed to comply with the Committee's directions and submit progress reports.
