Ajayinder Sangwan and Ors vs Bar Council of Delhi

Bench: 2 — R.K. Agrawal

In Brief

The Supreme Court disposed of multiple interlocutory applications arising from Bar Council elections pending Law Degree verification. Finding that approximately 6.4 lakh advocates had submitted application forms but verification by Universities was incomplete, the Court held that advocates whose forms were submitted should be provisionally enrolled and allowed to participate in State Bar Council elections. Those whose degrees are later found false or fabricated would be excluded, and appropriate orders would follow. The Court directed Universities to expedite verification by 31 March 2018 and set a new electoral timeline beginning 1 December 2017, with elections to conclude by 15 February 2018.">
