Astha Goel and Ors vs Medical Counselling Committee & Ors

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah

In Brief

Seven medical candidates sought court orders directing the Medical Counselling Committee to conduct an additional counselling round for vacant NEET-PG-2021 seats after eight to nine completed rounds, in which 1,456 seats remained unfilled. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition, holding that despite large numbers of vacant seats—particularly 1,100 non-clinical posts that remain vacant annually—time schedules for medical admissions must be strictly followed. The Court found that conducting further counselling rounds would compromise medical education quality, affect public health, and interfere with the already-commenced NEET-PG-2022 admission process. Mid-stream admissions after the academic session begins were held impermissible.
