In Brief
Physical Education Directors in Karnataka government colleges sought retrospective pay scale benefits granted by a 1999 government order. The State previously honoured this order for an identically situated employee (Shri N. Ramesh) in 2009 and granted similar benefits to comparable employees in 2014. The appellants were denied the same benefit citing a 2008 order limiting benefits to future dates only. The Supreme Court held that the State, having accepted and implemented the 1999 order's judgment and continued granting such benefits to similar employees, is estopped from relying on the 2008 order. The Court directed the State to extend all benefits within three months and clarified the judgment applies only to pending cases of similarly situated employees.
