Five accused were convicted for murder, kidnapping, and related offences based on circumstantial evidence. Two appellants withdrew their appeals; the Supreme Court examined the cases of the remaining three (Bhag Singh, Baj Singh, Bagicha Singh). The Court found serious flaws: the extra-judicial confessions were not genuine individual admissions; identical disclosure statements from all accused lacked credibility; weapons recovered did not match injuries inflicted; personal belongings were not identified as belonging to the deceased; and motive alone could not sustain conviction. Finding the prosecution had failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt, the Court set aside convictions and directed immediate release of the three appellants.
