Bhan Singh vs State of Punjab

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

A 99-year-old appellant convicted under Sections 304B (causing death by negligence), 306 (abetment of suicide), and 498A (cruelty by husband/relatives) of the Indian Penal Code was sentenced to multiple terms of rigorous imprisonment with fines. The Supreme Court, exercising discretion based on the appellant's exceptional age and having already served one year and nine months in custody, reduced the sentence to the period already undergone and ordered his immediate release. The Court stressed this relief was not a precedent for other cases.
