Bhan Singh vs State of Punjab

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

Bhan Singh, aged 99 years, appealed his conviction and sentence for offences of causing death by negligence, abetment of suicide, and cruelty to a woman (Sections 304B, 306, and 498A IPC). Originally sentenced to seven, five, and two years' rigorous imprisonment respectively, he had already served one year and nine months. The Supreme Court, considering his extreme age and time served, allowed the appeal and reduced the sentence to the period already undergone, ordering his immediate release. The Court emphasized this was case-specific relief and not a general precedent."
