C. Manjamma & Anr vs Divisional Manager, The New India Assurance Co. Ltd

Bench: 2 — Dinesh Maheshwari

In Brief

A 30-year-old autorickshaw driver died from cardiac arrest while working for the New India Assurance Company. The Workmen's Compensation Commissioner awarded ₹4,15,960 to his widow and mother, finding the death was caused by job-related stress. The High Court reversed this, finding insufficient evidence. The Supreme Court restored the award, holding that the Commissioner's findings—based on FIR, autopsy, and other evidence—were not perverse and constituted a reasonable conclusion. The High Court had no substantial question of law to justify interfering with the Commissioner's judgment.
