A commercial booth in Chandigarh was allotted to Hari Ram in 1996 for Rs. 70,500. He paid only the initial amount but defaulted on subsequent installments and ground rent due from 1997-1999, despite being given 26 opportunities by the administration over four years. The administration cancelled the allotment and evicted him. The High Court set aside the eviction, ordering return of his deposit. The Supreme Court allowed the appeal, holding that sustained default justifies cancellation. However, balancing the interests of both parties, the respondent was given six months to pay Rs. 10,25,950 (market value as of 2010, less amounts already paid) to retain the allotment, or face eviction."
