Chandrabhan vs State of Maharashtra & Ors

Bench: 2 — <UNKNOWN>, <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

The appellant challenged his exclusion from Scheduled Tribe (Halba) status after a Caste Scrutiny Committee found his claim unsustainable. The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, holding that once a caste claim is invalidated, no benefits can be extended under the Maharashtra Caste Certificate Act, 2000. The Court affirmed that Article 142's wide powers cannot override statutory requirements for caste verification. While the Court acknowledged earlier precedents that had protected individuals in certain circumstances, it held that the 2001 legislation mandates withdrawal of all benefits upon cancellation of a false caste claim, and societal integrity in the reserved category system cannot be compromised."
