CHANDRABHAN vs STATE OF MAHARASHTRA & ORS

Bench: 2 — Uday Umesh Lalit, Ajay Rastogi

In Brief

The appellant claimed to belong to the Scheduled Tribe "Halba" to claim reserved category benefits, but a Caste Scrutiny Committee found his claim false. The Supreme Court held that once a caste claim is negated by the Committee under the Maharashtra Caste Certificate Act, 2000, no further benefits can be extended. Although the Supreme Court has broad power under Article 142 to render complete justice, this power must respect legislative mandates. The statutory framework for verifying and cancelling false caste certificates must have full effect. The Court dismissed the appeal, affirming that societal probity and the sanctity of the reservation system cannot be compromised.
