Common Cause & Ors vs Union of India & Ors

Bench: 3 — Madan B. Lokur

In Brief

In this writ petition, the Supreme Court investigated allegations that the former CBI Director, Ranjit Sinha, abused his authority to obstruct investigations and prosecutions in coal block allocation cases by meeting accused persons without the investigating team present. A Committee headed by retired IPS officer M.L. Sharma examined the allegations. The Court found a prima facie case of abuse of authority and directed the CBI, under its new leadership, to constitute a Special Investigating Team to investigate these allegations, with coordination from the Chief Vigilance Commissioner and legal guidance from the designated Special Public Prosecutor for the coal block cases."
