Hanuman Ram vs State

Bench: 2 — 2

In Brief

Hanuman Ram was convicted of murder, rioting, and criminal conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment based on a co-accused's confessional statement and recovery of a knife. The High Court held that the confessional statement was inadmissible against him under Sections 25–26 of the Evidence Act, and the knife bore no conclusive blood traces. Finding these were the only two pieces of circumstantial evidence linking him to the crime, the Court concluded he had strong grounds to challenge his conviction. Accordingly, his sentences were suspended and he was released on bail pending appeal.
