Haribhau, a village Sarpanch, assaulted and abused a school teacher in 2005 over a dispute regarding school records. He was convicted under Sections 353, 294 and 504 of the IPC and sentenced to three months' rigorous imprisonment with fines. The High Court upheld his conviction. The Supreme Court affirmed the conviction but reduced the jail sentence to one month (already undergone) and enhanced the fine to Rs. 15,000 to be paid to the victim. The Court considered mitigating factors including his age, spotless past, the incident's age and spontaneous nature, and the fine was made a condition for avoiding revival of the remaining jail sentence.
