Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited challenged an order requiring it to reinstate a former employee without back wages but with full service benefits. The Supreme Court set aside the reinstatement order and instead arranged a special accommodation: the respondent would work in a Class IV post in Pune with protected pay and benefits (excluding back wages), reporting within two weeks of receiving the appointment order. The arrangement also provided that if a Class IV vacancy arose in Sholapur (near the respondent's home due to health issues), he would be considered for transfer there.
