Supreme Court of India 2017-02-13 remanded

Bench: 7 — <UNKNOWN>

In Brief

This judgment addresses a suo motu contempt petition against Justice C.S. Karnan, a High Court judge. Despite due notice, Justice Karnan failed to appear on the hearing date, and no authorized representative appeared on his behalf. The Court rejected attempts by unauthorized counsel to intervene or represent him. The Supreme Court held that contempt proceedings are strictly between the Court and the alleged contemnor, and the latter must appear in person without unauthorized representation. The matter was adjourned to 10 March 2017, with a direction for Justice Karnan's personal appearance. Interim orders were continued.
