In Brief
The Supreme Court heard an appeal by four accused persons convicted for dowry-related offences and the death of a young woman. The Court found that while the conviction of appellant no. 1 (the husband) was justified, the cases against appellants nos. 2, 3, and 4 (father-in-law, brother-in-law, and mother-in-law) were doubtful. The Court held that mere allegations of dowry demands and cruelty, without evidence of active participation in causing the death, do not sustain criminal conviction. Accordingly, the convictions and sentences of the three appellants were set aside and they were ordered to be released, while the conviction of appellant no. 1 was upheld.
