Jagjit Singh and Others Etc. Etc vs State of Punjab and Another Etc. Etc

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah, B.V. Nagarathna

In Brief

This judgment deals with multiple consolidated land acquisition compensation appeals filed by landowners against the State of Punjab and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority. The High Court had awarded compensation at Rs. 7,80,000 per acre and Rs. 19,85,700 per acre in different cases. The Supreme Court found the landowners were similarly situated to parties in two earlier Supreme Court decisions (Kapoor Singh and Surjit Singh) where compensation had been enhanced. Accordingly, the Court partly allowed these appeals and enhanced compensation by Rs. 1,00,000 per acre in most cases and Rs. 2,00,000 per acre in one case, with solatium from the High Court's order date but no interest due to substantial delay in appeals.
