The Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the accused persons for offences of rioting, simple hurt, and grievous hurt under the Indian Penal Code. However, it modified the sentence imposed by the Trial Court and High Court. Since the accused had already served approximately six months in prison (the maximum possible sentence being one year), the Court reduced the sentence to time already served. Simultaneously, the Court enhanced the compensation amount to be paid to victims who sustained grievous injuries, to be paid within six weeks. This balanced approach served the ends of justice while recognizing the substantial punishment already endured.
