A deputy superintendent of police was found dead in July 2016 in Karnataka. His father and son sought CBI investigation after local police concluded it was suicide, fearing foul play given that the deceased had named three powerful government officials as threats to his life shortly before his death. The High Court had dismissed their petition. The Supreme Court allowed the appeal, holding that while CBI transfer requires exceptional circumstances where State investigation does not inspire confidence, this case warranted such transfer given the deceased's specific warnings and the high positions of the accused, directing CBI to complete investigation within three months.
