The Supreme Court heard appeals by three individuals convicted in connection with fraudulent jewel loans at Indian Overseas Bank. Branch Manager T. Maran sanctioned agricultural loans without proper jewel security by forging documents and manipulating loan records. Appellants M. Ramalingam and N. Rajangam were borrowers convicted of conspiracy and cheating. The Court upheld Maran's conviction for corruption and forgery but acquitted the borrowers, finding they were illiterate farmers acting in good faith without knowledge that loans required pledged jewels. They could not have conspired unknowingly to defraud the bank. The Court set aside their convictions, allowing their appeals and discharging their bail bonds.
