Vinod Kumar Garg, a public servant at Delhi's electricity board, was convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 for demanding and accepting Rs. 500 as the second instalment of a Rs. 2,000 bribe to provide an unauthorised electricity meter. The High Court upheld his conviction. On appeal, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, holding that although witnesses gave contradictory details, the core facts—that bribe was demanded, paid, and recovered from his pocket—were proved beyond doubt through oral testimony and contemporaneous documentary evidence. Minor inconsistencies over a 5-6 year gap were immaterial. The Court upheld the sentence of one and a half years rigorous imprisonment and a fine."
