State of U.T., Chandigarh vs Rahul & Anr

Bench: 2 — M.R. Shah, B.V. Nagarathna

In Brief

The Supreme Court restored a murder conviction that the High Court had quashed. Two school students, siblings Kavita and Gaurang Sahu, were killed with their throats slit. The accused, Rahul, was charged under Section 302 IPC. Though the case relied on circumstantial evidence with no direct eyewitness, the prosecution proved: (1) motive—the accused had harassed the victim; (2) the murder weapon (a knife) was purchased by the accused; (3) a blood-stained shawl recovered from the accused matched both victims; and (4) the accused had an unexplained injury on his finger. The High Court erroneously found the prosecution had not established a complete chain of evidence, but the Supreme Court held the cumulative circumstances proved guilt beyond reasonable doubt and restored the conviction."
