In Brief
JSS Medical College admitted MBBS students in violation of a Supreme Court order from an earlier case. When the College later allowed these students to continue and reach their 4th-and-a-half year, the Court faced competing interests. Balancing sympathy for the innocent students against the need to punish institutional non-compliance, the Court allowed them to complete their degree. However, to enforce accountability and send a message to other medical colleges, the Court imposed Rs. 5-crore costs on the College and reduced its future admission capacity from 200 to 150 seats for the next academic year."
