In Brief
The Supreme Court quashed criminal proceedings against the appellants (brother-in-law and mother-in-law of a deceased woman) in a dowry-related death case. Despite allegations of dowry harassment and murder, the Court found that the chargesheet contained only vague and casual references to the appellants without specific allegations of their involvement. Documentary evidence showed the first appellant was working at a bank 40 km away during the alleged incident. The Court held that mechanically prosecuting family members based on casual mention in matrimonial dispute FIRs, without proof of their active participation, constitutes abuse of judicial process and justifies quashing the proceedings under Section 482 Cr.P.C.
