A man was convicted in 2019 for attacking his uncle with a spade in 1994. The trial court sentenced him to three years imprisonment; the High Court reduced it to two years. The Supreme Court, noting that nearly 25 years had elapsed between the crime and conviction, held that imprisonment after such an inordinate delay would be unjust. The Court set aside the imprisonment and modified the sentence to the period already served (over four months), while increasing the fine to Rs. 24,000, with Rs. 20,000 directed as compensation to the victim under Section 357 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
